Panel Upgrades and Rewiring

Older houses were wired for a smaller electrical life than the one you are living. When a panel is full, obsolete, or undersized for what you keep adding, an upgrade replaces the service equipment and gives every circuit somewhere to go.

Almost every ambitious plan a homeowner has eventually runs into the panel. The kitchen remodel, the finished basement, the shop in the detached garage, the car that needs charging overnight: all of them arrive at the same box on the wall and ask whether there is room. Capacity is the real constraint, and it is a question with two parts. Are there physical spaces left for breakers, and does the incoming service have headroom for the loads you want to run at the same time? Those are different questions and they get answered separately.

Rewiring is the other half of this work, and it is far more often partial than total. Replacing every conductor in a finished house is disruptive and rarely the right recommendation. The common version is targeted: the circuits that are undersized for what they now feed, the runs with deteriorated insulation, the aluminum branch connections that need proper devices, the ungrounded circuits in the rooms where grounding matters most. A good assessment tells you which category your house is in before anyone opens a wall.

What Panel and Rewiring Work Includes

  • Service and main panel replacement — New service equipment, new breakers, and every existing circuit landed and labeled properly. This is the job when the panel is full, aging, or too small for how the house is used now.
  • Subpanels for additions and outbuildings — A finished basement, a detached garage, or a shop often makes more sense fed by a subpanel than by long individual runs back to the main panel.
  • Obsolete and problem panels — Certain older panel types are widely treated as a liability by insurers and inspectors. If yours is one of them, replacement is usually the recommendation rather than repair.
  • Branch circuit rewiring — Replacing specific runs that are undersized, damaged, or unsafe for their load, rather than tearing out an entire house's wiring when only part of it is a problem.
  • Knob-and-tube and aluminum branch wiring — Both come with real handling requirements and both draw questions from insurers. The scope depends on how much remains in service and where it feeds.
  • Grounding and bonding corrections — Grounding electrode connections, bonding at the service, and the separation of neutrals and grounds in subpanels. Unglamorous work that determines how faults behave.

How a Panel Upgrade Actually Happens

  1. Load calculation and assessment — Existing loads, planned additions, service size, and panel condition are added up on paper first. This determines whether you need a new panel, a larger service, or simply a subpanel for room.
  2. Permit and utility coordination — Most jurisdictions require a permit for panel and service work, and your city or county building department confirms what applies. If the service itself changes, the utility has to be scheduled into the plan.
  3. The day the power goes out — Power is dropped, old equipment comes out, new equipment goes in, and every circuit is landed, torqued, and labeled. Expect the house to be down for a meaningful part of a day.
  4. Inspection and turn-on — The inspector reviews the work, the utility reconnects if it was involved, and circuits are energized and verified one at a time. Keep the paperwork with your house records.

What it costs

Panel work varies more than most electrical jobs, and the variables are structural rather than cosmetic. Where the meter and panel sit, and whether they are together or on opposite ends of the house, changes the amount of conductor and labor involved. Overhead service with a mast is a different job than underground service. Whether the existing service size is adequate, or the whole service needs to grow, is the single largest fork in the road. Then come the details: condition of the existing circuits landing in the panel, whether a subpanel solves the problem instead, drywall and finish repair, and the permit and inspection your jurisdiction requires.

Questions people ask

How do I know if my panel is full?

Open the door and look for empty breaker positions. If there are none, or if you see tandem breakers squeezed in where full-size ones belong, you are at or past capacity. Full is not the only reason to upgrade, though. A panel with spaces left can still be undersized for the loads you want to run simultaneously, which is what a load calculation reveals.

Does the power have to be off all day?

Plan on a significant outage for a main panel replacement. The exact window depends on how many circuits are involved, their condition, and whether the utility needs to disconnect and reconnect. It is worth planning around: move anything perishable, charge what needs charging, and expect the house to be dark while the work is underway.

My insurer asked about knob-and-tube wiring. What should I tell them?

Tell them what is actually there, which usually requires having someone look. Knob-and-tube is widely treated as a problem by insurers, but many houses have only remnants left in place and no longer energized. The distinction between abandoned and in-service wiring matters, and an electrician can document which is which in writing for you.

Is aluminum branch wiring something I have to replace?

Not automatically. Aluminum branch circuits from a particular era require specific devices and connection methods wherever a splice or device is involved, because the failure point is the connection rather than the wire itself. Recognized remediation approaches exist. What matters is that anyone working on those circuits knows what they are dealing with and treats them accordingly.
